Problem

Getting pregnant and becoming a new mom is amazing…except when it’s not. According to Vox, the U.S. has the highest maternal death rate out of any developed country. They American College of OB/GYNs (ACOG) agrees that new moms are falling through the cracks of the U.S. healthcare system in so many ways: Mental health, physical recovery, rehab, nutrition, and more.

What the Company Does

Soshe believes the fastest path to impact is to educate and empower new moms. Soshe is building consumer-centric, app-based digital health and wellness program to help expecting and new moms. The company aims to provide better preparation for birth, breastfeeding, parenting, self-care, and more with online classes, expert-reviewed articles, and other quality content covering the topics that other apps superficially gloss over and physicians wish they had more time to cover. They also strive to solve problems in real-time with 2.0 digital health tools. Lastly, Soshe is providing more human support such as lactation consultants, midwives and doulas, mental health support, physical therapy, nutrition support, and more.

The Market

According to the company, the U.S. market for maternal health information and services is estimated at more than $100 billion. Soshe is different from its competitors because it is consumer-focused. The main differentiation is the high tech and high touch aspect, providing end-to-end solutions that are both efficient and effective, opposed to point solutions like telehealth only, content only, or in-person support only. They are planning to do a clinical trial to demonstrate their impact on health outcomes and health economics, which will unlock access to payers. Lastly, Soshe is built around consumer acquisition hooks, so they are built to cut through the noise of the existing market.

Business Model

Their business model is a consumer subscription and membership model, where new and expecting moms get quality content, 2.0 digital health tools, and human support starting with expert-moderated groups and telehealth.

Traction

Soshe launched its MVP app to rave reviews by experts and moms. They are in beta tests with moms and have collected structured feedback from experts as well. Their product roadmap is full of user-tested enhancements that will get them closer to a growth phase after this initial testing phase.

Founding Team Background

Soshe Founder Shannon Field just moved to Boston after more than 20 years in San Francisco. Field has decades of consumer tech experience as a product manager, growth leader, and general manager including digital health and marketplaces, and including several early-stage startups plus big consumer brands like Pinterest, Disney, and Trulia. Other team members are tech and maternal health talent who are passionate about supporting new moms with better information and more human support.

What They Need Help With

Soshe is always looking for feedback from fellow entrepreneurs, investors, and given their focus on maternal health, any practitioners, provider groups, payers, or employers who can share insights that will help Soshe have a positive impact. The company is interested in speaking with potential investors as it prepares for their growth stage next year, as well as discussions with brands who might be interested in partnership opportunities.
