The Pop Quiz, Monday, is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise, after all, since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today, who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
1. Can you please tell everyone your name?
Hi! I’m Arden McLaughlin.
2. Tell us about your business and what you do?
I’m a publicist. I help people and companies tell their stories better and more effectively. We work together to figure out what that story is, who should hear it, what actions we want those people to take, and then create a plan to communicate to them.
3. Why did you want to become an entrepreneur?
Oh gosh… Sometimes I think I’m totally unemployable. The confines of an office make me nervous. I like working out at 8:15 a.m. without worrying about anyone thinking I’m being slack. I like creating a different structure every day, and so far, I’m the only boss who will hire me to do really great work in a way that makes sense for me.
4. What are the challenging aspects of running a business?
It’s lonely. There are times when I miss having coworkers. Now, I’m the boss. There’s no slack off days. Plus, the days can be really long. Back to the previous answer — yes, I can work out at 8:15 a.m., but I was up until midnight the night before at an event, running crisis communication for someone, or simply getting all the work done that clients need from me.
5. What do you love most about your job?
Seeing a client nail every point when he or she is in a media interview. Media relations is the best part of my job, and I love seeing a story really come to life on air or in print.
6. How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
I’m mostly a one-woman show. My cats aren’t too helpful in entertainment. 🙂
7. What would one piece of advice that you give to a new business owner?
Be patient with yourself, and also stop spending money on things like you did when you had a steady paycheck. Most of the money you bring in needs to go back to making your business work. Figure out what you can easily give up to see your dreams come true. For me, I stopped getting my nails done, went to a less expensive gym, and cut out a lot of travel. I’m okay with that. I love the work I get to do now, so I don’t need the other things as much as I did when I was working for other people.
