Pop Quiz, Monday with Bill McCue, Founder and President of McCuenications PR

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

1. Can you please tell everyone your name?

2. Tell us about your business and what you do?

I’m the Founder and President of McCuenications PR, a one-person full service PR and business consulting agency. I work with companies ranging from small businesses/start-ups to Fortune 100 enterprises to help them tell their stories through the media. My goals are to raise brand awareness, establish executives as industry experts/thought leaders and drive sales lead generation efforts. I’ve also assembled a world class network of trusted resources to provide video production, photography, SEO/SEM services, social media strategies, and digital marketing.

3. Why did you want to become an entrepreneur?

I always liked the idea of being my own boss and having full responsibility for the outcome of every project or campaign. I launched McCuenications PR earlier this year because I saw a market opportunity to provide results-driven PR services at an affordable price that would reduce “sticker shock” and make clients feel positive about their investment in me every day.

4. What are the challenging aspects of running a business?

The multi-tasking required to provide daily service to existing clients, conduct new business development on a regular basis, maintain accounts payable/accounts receivable, and keep “normal” business hours so there’s time to relax, blow off some steam and enjoy quality time with friends and family.

5. What do you love most about your job?

Listening to smart people talk about their businesses and share their stories. I also enjoy establishing mutually beneficial business relationships with my media contacts.

6. How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc.)?

I work out of my apartment so I try to listen to music all day when I’m not on the phone. I collect vintage vinyl, but having to flip an album every 20 minutes or so isn’t conducive to being productive. I tend to listen to The Current online out of Minneapolis or choose an NPR Tiny Desk Concert on YouTube. Thundercat and Khruangbin are current faves — Led Zeppelin is my all-time fave band.

7. What would one piece of advice that you give to a new business owner?

Work on your “elevator pitch” so that when people ask about your business, you’re prepared to give them a comprehensive but succinct explanation of what you do and why they should care.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
