Pop Quiz, Monday with Devin Walsh, COO at Chesapeake Brokerage

The Pop Quiz Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you cannot learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

  1. Can you please tell everyone your name?

Devin Walsh

2. Tell us about your business and what you do?

We create relationships and partner with financial advisors to help them advocate for their clients. We help advisor’s clients expose risks and goals in their financial plans and can utilize life insurance products as potential solutions to those problems and goals at hand. Our job is to grow our advisor’s practices and provide them with unbeatable solutions to help them mitigate risk and achieve the financial goals of their clients. Simply, we are the middlemen between insurance companies and financial advisors.

3. Why did you want to become an entrepreneur?

The ability to have a dream and make it a reality is something extraordinary. I’m a big believer in why people do things, and if I can do something that I’m passionate about and it positively affects other’s lives, there is no better feeling.

4. What are the challenging aspects of running a business?

The biggest challenge in running a business is finding the right people who share the same dream and passion as you. We are fortunate to have the team we have now that shares in this vision.

5. What do you love most about your job?

What I love is creating relationships. Every day there is a different advisor or client that we get to meet and have the chance to have a positive impact on. I had a client I worked with recently tell me I saved her life because of the disability policy she purchased earlier this year. Three months after she purchased the policy there was an accident, and she became disabled. Knowing because of our company and what we do she will be able to still provide for her family. There is no better feeling than having that type of positive impact on someone.

6. How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?

We have monthly happy hours to get out of the office and enjoy each other outside of work. We have gone to Mustang Alley’s down in Baltimore and mini-golfing to name a few. Linda in our office has won both so I need to try and find something where I might have a chance in beating her, not looking good haha.

7. What would one piece of advice that you give to a new business owner?

Take your time in hiring people and make sure that not only are they capable of doing the job but fit the culture of your company. Culture is, and we are lucky to have a group of people that genuinely enjoy one another and share a vision of success and service to our clients. Also, make sure that you have efficient processes in place to give your employees a track to run on to be successful.
