Pop Quiz, Monday with Donna Hoffman, Founder and President at Women on Course
The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
Can you please tell everyone your name?
What is your job role?
Founder and President
Tell us about your company?
Women on Course is the fastest growing national community for business professionals and lifestyle enthusiasts interested in connecting through the game of golf and all it has to offer. We help women leverage the golf lifestyle to make new connections, deepen relationships and learn new skills.
What do you love most about your job?
The freedom to create new ways to grow the business by overcoming the challenges of working in an industry that has difficulty embracing change.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
The most demanding boss is myself, and I love the flexibility to set my direction each day. I enjoy opening doors for women to discover the many ways that golf can enhance their business and personal lives.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
I surround myself with positive people who have different skills and interests. Brainstorming with them allows me to be more inventive and energized.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Most of the time I work solo, so the fun is when I am managing an event which is typically at a golf resort, country club or happy hour. Our event topics include fashion, wine tasting, golf and travel to the ‘product’ of my business is already fun.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
Limited resources — the potential for more events and more exposure is vast. With more staff, I could accomplish more aspects of my vision.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
If your customer base is loyal and the business concept is sound you can always find a way to be successful. Several years ago, the company was dissolved by my business partners. My reputation for outstanding customer service and care for the customers was all I needed to restart the company.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
The golf industry has not cracked the code on how to grow the women’s segment. My advice would be to think way outside the box and understand what draws women to the game. Set the expectations and deliver. Exceed the expectations, and you grow!
