Pop Quiz, Monday with Gustavo Sampaio, 5x Emmy Award Winning Editor, Filmmaker & Founder of NoHo CineFest

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

  1. Can you please tell everyone your name?

2. Tell us about your business and what you do?

I’m an editor by profession. But I’m also a filmmaker and a film festival director.

3. Why did you want to become an entrepreneur?

I’ve been a freelancer most of my career, so I wanted to have something that I could control and count on from my own efforts. My wife and I started our North Hollywood CineFest film festival six years ago, and we’re proud to have a business of our own. There ’s freedom that comes from being your own boss.

4. What are the challenging aspects of running a business?

For me, it’s the actual business side with budgets and taxes because it’s the part I enjoy least.

However, the biggest challenge is to create momentum and having people get to know your business and ultimately trust it. Film festivals should be fun events, and we work hard to make sure all who attend have a great time. However, to do that, we as a business, need to be extremely organized.

We also try to connect the community to a cause each year to provide further meaning to our work.

5. What do you love most about your job?

My job as an editor is great because I get to work for a major network, CBS. I enjoy creating something that will be seen by, potentially, millions of people.

6. How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?

I like to socialize and talk to people during slower times. I think it’s important to get to know people aside from the automatic “Hey, what’s up?” we do as we pass each other in hallways. I think that will help create a healthy work environment where you naturally become a team.

7. What would one piece of advice that you give to a new business owner?

I would say for them to be crystal clear on how they want their business to be defined. It may seem obvious, but it’s harder than it sounds. There are lots of dynamics to consider, especially when creating a marketing strategy. Having a clear vision and direction will likely allow for faster and more effective growth.
