Make Your 2016 Not Suck

Change the Way you Think about your New Year’s Resolutions so That you Will Actually Get Them Done

As the holidays pass and the New Year approaches people always begin to think of what they will achieve in the upcoming year. Everyone hopes for increased wealth, health, and happiness. Most people sign up for gym memberships hoping that they will finally get the 6 pack they have always wanted, only to stop going a few weeks into the New Year. Many people are excited about reading more books, about writing more blog posts, or about starting to meditate every morning.

While these goals are all great, if you don’t make reasonable resolutions you will not get anywhere in 2016. The more attainable the resolution, the more likely you are to stick with it. Follow these steps and you will be making real changes to your life in 2016.

Don’t Wait until New Years to Start

The biggest mistake people make when making resolutions is pushing off actually starting at New Years. If you are hoping to spend an hour in the gym three times a week starting January 1 get into the gym today and spend a couple of hours talking with instructors, learning the schedule of the gym, and planning out which friends you want to workout with in the mornings. If you want to start a video show for your business spend the next few days talking with a videographer, planning what your first video will be about, scheduling a shoot, or even starting to tape today so that when New Years hits you are already on your way with a running start.

If you show up January 1 to the gym for the first time and you spend the entire day signing up for a membership card you will have wasted a precious day that you could have been working out.

Personally, I wanted to take video seriously in 2016, so I started filming my video show on December 25th for Ratz Pack Media so that I would have 5 videos before the year even started.

Make Resolutions With Built in Reset Buttons

Life gets in the way, especially when you don’t plan properly. If your resolution this year is to read 20 pages a day and you fall behind, the pages you “owe” will start to stack up. After missing one day you will think “I need to make a block of time to read 40 pages today.” Later, if you have missed a week, you will “owe” 140 pages and you have no way of ever catching up. So, instead of catching up you will most likely give up.

This is why you need a restart button if something goes wrong. If you planned to be at the gym 4 times a week and you miss a day, don’t think that you will just do any extra workout next week, just restart the next day with the goal of 4 workouts, and if you get to fit another one in that’s great, but not necessary.

Make Small Attainable Goals

If you are planning to give up all sugars or become a vegan on Jan 1 with no preparation you will most likely fail. Going cold turkey on your resolution is a great way to find yourself binge eating only a few days after New Years. You need to make small changes to your lifestyle that will gradually get you to the right place.

Don’t consider your resolution a one step process, break your goal down into a several year plan, because having a six pack in 5 years is better than never having one. Make a small change this coming year, so that when 2017 comes around you are ready for phase two.

Don’t Make Your Goals Too Easy

On the opposite side of that coin, you need to make your goals difficult enough that you won’t push off working until later on in the year. If your resolution is to read 1 chapter of a book every month you will likely push off reading until the end of the month. Then, inevitably, something will go wrong and you will not have time for even one chapter. Instead, make a resolution that gets you to work.

Turn Your New Year’s Resolution into a Lifelong Revolution

If you want your 2016 to be your best year yet don’t wait for January to pass you by, get started today. Make goals that are both realistic and demanding, so that you will push yourself to go the extra mile without pushing yourself too far. If you plan your resolutions right, 2016 will be your first step in a significantly healthier, wealthier, and happier life.
