Someone Is Standing Over Your Shoulder and Staring At You While You Eat…

Hmm, is it weird if someone stands behind you while you’re eating? (photo provided by Linda Ng)

Awhile ago, I wrote a post about how awkward it was to share a table at a restaurant with a stranger. That can happen if there are a lot of people at the restaurant, especially in Asia.

I have a new twist on this scenario.

How do you feel if someone is standing over your shoulder while you are eating?

When you go to a restaurant nowadays, you might be issued a number if there is a line-up. When there is a table, your number is called and you can get seated. In Malaysia, there are places where you don’t get issued a number. Instead, you are on your own! This seems to happen often at hawker centres. It’s a game of “find your own table”.

I was having a meal one time and it was pretty crowded. A random lady walked up behind our table and stood there, with her arms crossed. She was quite close and stared at us. We kept eating, but it was very awkward. She was able to hear our conversations, so you start to feel like your privacy is being invaded. We were almost finished, except one person, who was a bit of a slow eater. I felt so pressured to hurry up and leave. We all sat in silence as we waited for the person to finish eating.
