Do you want to see your academic work published?

The Statecraft Review uses Medium to manage submission and publish articles. The Statecraft Review aims to host rigorous, intellectual, and original student work. This means that our submission process goes through a few steps.

If you’d like to write for us, the first thing you’ll need to do is create a Medium account and fill out the form below. This allows us to add you as a writer so that you can submit your work for consideration.

Once we’ve added you as a writer and you’ve submitted your work, one of our editors will be in touch so that begin the editorial process and get the work ready for publication. This will primarily involve one of our editors reading your submission and opening a dialogue with you about how to move forward.

After we’ve done this, we will forward your submission onto someone more knowledgeable than us! This will likely be a University of Queensland professor. Rest assured these will be sent anonymously. Once the reviewer has returned with feedback, we will pass this on to you and discuss how best to incorporate this feedback into your work.

Arduous, I know, but this allows us to ensure that the content which is hosted by The Statecraft Review is accurate and up to date. Given the depth we’re looking for, it would be impossible to ensure this without consulting external reviewers.

Submission Guidelines

  • We only accept original drafts which have not already been published elsewhere. You can submit essays which have been completed for assessment at university, however these will likely need structural editing.
  • Submissions should be academic in nature. We are looking for structured and original arguments supported by thorough research, not polemics and opinion pieces — however, we’d love to hear see this kind of work in Statecraft Magazine!
  • Submissions should be between 2000 and 6000 words. If your work is shorter than this, you should consider publishing it in our sister publication, Statecraft Magazine! If your work is longer than this but you’d like to see it published, let us know and we’ll work something out.
  • In-text referencing must be used and a bibliography placed at the end of your submission. We follow UQ’s Harvard referencing guide, available here.
  • Submissions must be made through Medium. Here’s how.
  • If you want to remove a piece, please ask first.
  • Authors must have a profile picture.

Request to Write for Statecraft

Once you fill out the form, you will be added as a writer.

That does not mean we guarantee that we will publish what you send us. We carefully review each submission to make sure it meets the standards we are looking for — however, to date we have published every piece that has been submitted.
