Order in Complexity
The 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Syukuro Manabe (USA), Klaus Hasselmann (Germany) and Giorgio Parisi (Italy). Manabe was the first to use a computer to predict global warming 50 years ago, and has been a leader in this research ever since. This is the first time the prize has been awarded to geophysics and the first time it has been awarded to computational science.
I was expecting Katalin Karikó, who led the development of mRNA vaccines to win the Physiology/Medicine or Chemistry prize of 2021, but I was wrong. I, however, still believe that she will win the prize in the near future.
The Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry are awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Prize in Physiology or Medicine by the Karolinska Institutet, the Prize in Literature by the Swedish Academy, and the Peace Prize by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The National Bank of Sweden will select the Prize in Economic Sciences, which according to the Nobel Foundation is not technically a Nobel Prize because it is not in the will of Alfred Nobel, the founder of the Nobel Prize.
