In professional sports, financial value is dictated by performance. You play great and eventually you’ll get paid. This is most evident in soccer, where player’s value can quickly ascend by his performance during the course of a season or in some cases, just few good games. That was the case for James Rodriguez, who was outstanding for Colombia during the 2014 World Cup. Rodriguez scored 6 goals in 5 games and was awarded the Golden Boot for most goals scored during the tournament.

Rodriguez was later bought by Real Madrid for a record fee of £71 million. That’s a 85% increase in value. That also equals to a £6.5 million increase per game or £72,222.22 per minute. So yes, Rodriguez was sweating money during those five games.

Let’s take a look at some of the player’s whose value has increased the most this season.

Leicester City Big Three: Vardy, Mahrez and Konte.

Mahrez and Vardy celebrate Leicester title

It’s no surprise to see Vardy, Mahrez and Konte included in this list. Leicester won the English Premier League title for the first time in their history and these three players were a big part of the reason. They were consistent all year and improved match after match.

How much have did they improve? Leicester paid a combined £7.1 million for Vardy, Mahrez and Konte and today they are worth a combined £42 million — according to Transfermarkt data — Mahrez alone is valued at £20 million. That’s almost a 500% increase in combined value.

John Stones — Center Back — Everton

Everton acquired Stones from Barley in 2013 for £3 million. Today, English tabloids haveManchester City paying close to £50 million his services. Stones is considered one of the top center backs in the world. He was great for Everton but paying that amount for a center back would be foolish. Center backs are expensive — specially if they’re English — but Stones’ real value is around £30 million. Regardless who ends up getting Stones, Everton undoubtedly will get back their return and some extra change.

Philippe Coutinho — Midfielder — Liverpool

Inter fans must be scratching their head wondering why Inter sold Coutinho to Liverpool three years ago. At the time, it seemed like it was a good move for Inter — Coutinho was only 19 and hadn’t played much — so getting £8.5 million from an unproven player didn’t seem so bad. Unluckily for them, Coutinho continued to develop and is one of the top creative midfielders in the Premier League.

Coutinho will probably leave Liverpool this summer in order to play Champions League football next season. It is rumored that Barca are interested but whoever ends up buying him, will have to pay Liverpool a lot of money.
