A Peak Behind the Paywall
This is a snapshot of my paywall. I was not invited by Medium to join the partnership program but when they opened it up to all , I signed on as an experiment.
I write mostly for pleasure and to journal my thoughts as a therapeutic tool and have come to enjoy sharing my stories first on Cowbird , then on Medium.
Since I also take pleasure in reading the vast treasures of other’s stories here on Medium , I became a paying member , a deal at $5.00 dollars a month. I also wanted to contribute to Medium’s efforts to keep it commercial free.
I did not imagine ever getting paid for my writing hobby but am pleased to even out the odds here. Give a little , get a little.
What I learned :
Even with a small following , you get paid reflective of that fact.
I received fewer claps on my locked stories.
I experienced writer’s block as it is better to give than receive.
Followers of my stories slowed down.
You are only as good as your last story as very few readers read my archived stories.
You feel compelled to write consistently and often ; not just when the muse strikes.
It is hard to sell your soul ; a bit of cognitive disssonace.
I may still be tempted to lock my stories but less often.
I couldn’t publish under my home site, The Story Hall.
So , in summation , I have to thank my readers for reading and for the claps which actually did translate into money. I also want to thank Medium for their generous egalitarian opportunity extended to members regardless of status. Equality for all , brought to you by Medium. You just have to smile at that concept.
“You see, in my view a writer is a writer not because she writes well and easily, because she has amazing talent, because everything she does is golden. In my view a writer is a writer because even when there is no hope, even when nothing you do shows any sign of promise, you keep writing anyway.”
