Southend Pier in the south east of England is the longest pier in the United Kingdom. It was badly damaged by fire in 2005 (as shown). However a similar

or worse fate was avoided last week-end, when a fire appeared. This time however, Thomas Watson, a council worker was having a day off with his wife and little daughter. He realised that he had the means of putting it out himself, and did so by peeing on it. When the Fire Brigade, summoned by his wife arrived, they confirmed that the fire was no more.

Rumours to the effect that Mr Watson was taken in by the Essex Police for exposing himself seem grossly exaggerated.
