In the town of S, we stayed with friends who are soaking-wet liberals. He was a trade-unionist and as such much involved in the defence of migrants when they are victimised. A busy road near the suburb where he lived had angered

residents for a long time because of reckless traffic whizzing past at speed, causing accidents and intolerable noise. The neighbours appealed to him to do something about this, and he organised a petition. Local governments are notorious for not wanting to tamper with the status quo, but after six months they passed a law limiting speed to 60 kmph, any infringement to which…
