Mourning Mourning Dove
For several years, Mourning Dove has sat in the nest in the wreath by the carport door. Mostly she watches me carefully, but she knows that I will not bother her and that she is safe. This year she went through trees being cut down along the edge of the carport where she sits, and the stump removers coming in and grinding up the stumps, and throwing mud and wood in her direction.
One day, I found a broken egg on the steps below the nest. She continues sitting and sitting….and I tell her what a good mom she is when I walk by her to go down the steps to my car.
A few days ago the remaining egg hatched and ‘we’ have a baby Mourning Dove. Congratulations MOM, you did a good job.
I have sold my house on the lake and bought a smaller place. Soon, I will be taking the wreath with me as I move further north closer to my family, since aging periodically requires some help from others. I will miss her and I hope she finds a safe place for her nest next year and that another mama bird finds the wreath to be a comfortable place to build her nest and raise her babies. The cycle of life continues.
