show me your scraps
and your fault lines to read
along the jagged edges of your fears

we cut out windows
on past or desire
glance back at something better
than the dingy pages here and now

but here and now is what we are
stains, dreams, venoms

the night carries dreams
in tongues long forgotten
circles gently repeating
like resolutions or traps

on poorer soil
the damage will be smaller

what else can we do but talk
in spores, leave a clumsy trail
of coffee stains or mishaps, echoes
of an image haunting us

I will leave you to root
slowly test the soil
with reluctant strokes
pretend you’re made
of leaf alone

The SAPLING series is a joint project with artist and illustrator Jurgen Walschot.
Saplings are creative sprouts. I will write to the images, he will draw to the words.
