The Ant and the Grasshopper
An irreverent translation of La Fontaine’s finest
Having danced and pranced
all summer Grasshopper,
come winter,
had no reserves in her larder
not one scrap of wormlet or fly,
without summat to nibble she’d surely die.
She went crying for succour
to wise Ant her neighbour,
begging her
for some grains of wheat or rye
to survive until June or July.
I will refund you, she swore,
before August, plus interest galore.
Ant though wise was seriously flawed
she neither lent nor borrowed.
And how, she took to task
the indigent and impenitent one
and asked
when hot and balmy was the air
when food was everywhere,
what did you prepare for your own welfare?
All summer, the reckless and feckless
one admitted, not really sorry,
I indulged in singing and made merry.
What can I say, replied Ant
to the truant
now add dancing
to your chanting.

La Cigale, ayant chanté
Tout l’Été,
Se trouva fort dépourvu
Quand la bise fut venue.
Pas un seul petit morceau
De mouche ou de vermisseau.
Elle alla crier famine
Chez la Fourmi sa voisine,
La priant de lui prêter
Quelque grain pour subsister
Jusqu’à la saison nouvelle.
Je vous paierai, lui dit-elle,
Avant l’Oût foi d’animal,
Intérêt et principal.
La Fourmi n’est pas prêteuse ;
C’est là son moindre défaut.
« Que faisiez-vous au temps chaud ?
Dit-elle à cette emprunteuse.
— Nuit et jour à tout venant
Je chantais, ne vous déplaise.
— Vous chantiez ? j’en suis fort aise.
Eh bien !dansez maintenant. »
