Drag racing really turns people on. Especially adolescents, who seem to love the sound and smell and furtiveness of pitting one car against another. They are sure they have the most intricately tuned up, souped up car. And all the many watchers who stand like cock-fighting enthusiasts around the periphery, egging on their favorite, and watching the gravel smoke, and the sparks fly, love/hate the wonderful music of extremes, one against another. Some people like to challenge others on the public highways. It doesn’t end happily, eventually. But even grown men do this. Why?

Is there anyone who wouldn’t watch if they were there on the chosen street? Even those who disapprove would watch, I am supposing. I would, and I dislike the violence of rubber against gravel, or even the sound of a saw going through a tree. But I do watch, with fascination.

Is it enough to mount a protest about?

Watchers get to choose.
