Sapling #25

Woods are perilous places during a storm.
But nature’s violence is nothing compared to the hurricane raging within us.

Is there anything we can do to stem this inner turmoil, once erupted? More often than not we hadn’t even seen it coming, accustomed like we are to living under an ever brooding leaden sky. In despair, we wonder what has taken hold of us, and how we can possibly contain this roaring tempest again.

But that which has been unleased, won’t defer until its fury is spent. By clouds pouring down until their massive bodies have gone translucent, and winds razing our inner plains, mercilessly pounding any obstacle that blocks their way.

There is no escaping this. We have to weather it. And sometimes it will swallow us whole.

In the middle of it all, something is silently watching us. Waiting, unflinching.
A wild core, a deep power. Raising its crowned head to the gale undisturbed, it catches the scent of snapped wood and burrowed earth. And it knows that this, once the wind has settled, is how new worlds come to be.

The SAPLING series is a joint project with artist and illustrator Jurgen Walschot.
Saplings are creative sprouts. I will write to the images, he will draw to the words.
