The Kreung Tribe

The Kreung tribe is an ethnic group of about 22,385 (2013) that live in Laos and mainly Ratanakiri Province of northeastern Cambodia. They are known to cultivate plants like dry rice — which they grow using the slash and burn method. They are also into gathering supplements food, hunting, and fishing.

The Kreung culture is matrilineal but their villages are usually governed by a council of elders or an appointed headman. Their men are responsible for hunting and carrying out most of the strenuous agricultural activities while their women are in charge of looking after the home and children as well as other domestic duties like fetching water and rearing domestic animals.

Their living arrangement is quite interesting as their villages consist of stilted huts that are built around a central meeting area. Since each village has just a few hundred inhabitants, the people share quite an intimate relationship with one another.
