The Maasai are pastoralists who live in the Kajiado and Narok districts in Kenya and northern Tanzania. Their native dialect is the Maa(a member of the Nilotic language family). Apart from the elderly rural dwellers, they speak the official languages of Kenya and Tanzania which are Swahili and English respectively. The Maasai people practice African traditional religion where they worship a deity called Enkai or Engai who has a dual personality of black (narok)which represents benevolence and red (na-nyokie) which stands for vengeance and these two colors represent their totems, the black cow and the red cow with the lion as their totemic animal which can be killed.

Usually, every boy has to kill a lion before he is initiated into manhood. Their priest is known as Laibon who performs the priestly duties of divination, prophecy, shamanistic healing, rain making, and everything that has to do with the sanctity, protection, and preservation of their tribe.
