The Ankole also known as the Banyankole tribe take the role of an aunt to a whole other level with their rather unusual marriage rites where the Auntie to the bride is required to have sexual intercourse with the groom before the couple can be allowed to wed. Here’s a little about this intriguing custom of this Ugandan tribe in East Africa.

The Akole People of Uganda

In the heart of the Bantu kingdom, a traditional domain located in the southwestern regions of Uganda, that dates back as early as the 15th century resides the Banyankole also referred to as the Ankole tribe, a tribe with about 400,000 people whose languages are the Nkore, the Runyankole languages, with the Kiswahili and English Language as their national languages.

The people have been ruled by a king and practice different religions like Anglicanism, and Roman Catholicism — with many of their traditional folks still practising the indigenous Kinyanko religion. The tribe is famously known for their long-horned cattle which is said to have been claimed by their king.
