Scrivener. You either hate it or you love it.

From my experience in mentoring people to use Scrivener more efficiently, most users just don’t understand the power it contains. Some use it only for word processing, and if you are going to do that then I’d advise using Google Docs or Microsoft Word. And some only know how to use the binder to organize the files, but this is really only scratching the service of the platform.

First, let me go over some quick benefits of using Scrivener to write your next manuscript (or short story, or blog post, or just about anything really).

  • autosave every 3–5 seconds to the cloud (or wherever you want to save)
  • the snapshot feature allows you to save individual versions of chapters, as many as you want, and also compare and contrast the versions on the same screen.
  • personalize your word processing area with colors and fonts and background colors
  • Show your chapter/ scene summarizes on a corkboard format to see the whole picture and reorganize at will
  • compile and export final product in MOBI, TXT, PDF, or DOC (as well as some other formats.
