Life on Earth: The Art of War
(Chapter 2.2)
The sun shone down on the grounds of the Main Hive, where the courtyard was humming with activity. Heavily armed and armored Bees were buzzing about in groups of three, checking equipment and sharpening their weapons. Today was a Raiding day, and the forces of the Main Hive wanted to be ready.
Ever since they had arrived on Earth, the Queen had declared that Raiding would be a permitted, and encouraged, activity. The rumor among the general Bee populace was that Raids were preparing them for war. And, while we all know that rumors are grounded in truth, this rumor was definitely true. For, ever since the Bees had arrived on Earth, the Queen knew that the Contagion wouldn’t stop coming after them. The only way to stop these evil forces was to take the fight to them and defeat them once and for all.
With that knowledge, the Queen’s first act once the Bees had settled was to establish Raiding practices. She set out clear rules for engagement, knowing that the best way to be prepared to fight the Contagion was to train against their fighting style. As the wise warrior Bee, Sunflower Zu, once said, “Know your enemy and know yourself; in a hundred Raids, you will never be defeated.”
Drafted based on information from scouting reports during the Contagion’s uprising, the terms for Raiding were shared far and wide.
- Bees must only Attack or Defend in parties of three.
- Victorious Raiders will be awarded HXD from the Hive that they have Raided.
- Hives which have been Raided must be allowed the chance to seek revenge.
The Queen’s wisdom and knowledge of her people meant she knew that there had to be a costly prize up for grabs. If the prize wasn’t costly enough, her fun-loving citizens wouldn’t take Raiding seriously.
At the front of the courtyard, Air Marshall Zzzupata was inspecting the Bees closest to him.
“Too dull! You’ll never cut through your opponent without a sharpened weapon. Excellent, soldier. Your gear is in tiptop shape. What side of the armory did you pull this from? It’s ancient, but it’ll serve you well.”
Just then, the bells of the Main Hive rang out. “Form up!” bellowed Zzzupata, “This is what you’ve been training for. Make sure you remember your goals. Stick close to your wing Bees and use coordinated attacking strategies. Most importantly, stay focussed. Zzub zzub!” Zzzupata stood by the gates and saluted.
“ZZUB ZZUB!” came the chorused reply as the Bees flew past the air marshall and out into the fresh spring sunshine.
*** a few hours later ***
The air was thick with the sounds of battle. Bees from all across the Universe conducted their Raids with joy. With each Bee clearly wearing the colors and symbols of their Hive made it easy for teams to pick an opposing squad to engage with. Some squads carried the Flag of Revenge with them as they entered the airspace, these flags were large and obvious. Any Bees that recognized their colors and insignia on a Flag of Revenge had to engage with that squad immediately.
Raid after Raid was resolved as exhausted Bees dropped out of combat. Eventually, all the battles were completed. Victorious Bees who still had enough energy began to roam the battlefield, now helping the Bees that they had just defeated. Together, the Bees dusted themselves off and flew home. Some, delighted, rejoicing as they hauled home some HXD from their victory. Others, upset, consoling themselves as they flew home empty handed. All Bees, though, were comfortable in the knowledge that they would get another chance, and that they were more prepared for what lay ahead.
