Meet Medium’s News + Curation team

You may have noticed a new addition to Medium’s mobile apps last week: a little human touch in the form of curated lists of stories — what we call Collections. The idea is to give Medium readers an ability to browse thematically, to find timely and interesting stories, and to showcase the breadth of storytelling and conversation that’s happening on Medium, and to help talented but undiscovered writers get the attention they deserve.

We’ve already laid out the guidelines for how we create collections, but I thought it might be also be interesting to introduce the people who are doing this work. As the company spins out its award-winning publication Matter into a new entity called Matter Studios, most of the team have now turned their focus to the needs of the wider Medium community. Our News + Curation team is now building our collections, driven by Matter co-founder Bobbie Johnson, together with the expert eyes and discerning judgments of Alana Hope Levinson and Noah Rabinowitz, while editor Madison Kahn is working to get more high-impact, news-relevant stories written on Medium. Between them, and with the help of the product team, they are using their skills to understand the interests of the Medium community, identify the stories of the day, unearth the ideas that are making a difference, and find the pieces deep within Medium that deserve more attention.

Meanwhile Matter’s art director Erich Nagler is now design lead of Medium’s art, editorial, and marketing efforts, building on the agenda-setting work he’s been doing here for the last two years.

And of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that we’re hiring! We’re looking for a handful of awesome curator-editors to join Medium’s News + Curation team in NYC and SF. If that might be you, please apply.
