Unlisted Publishing on Medium
You can now quietly publish your story on Medium and only share it with the people who you want to read it.
Our latest feature is the perfect tool for those times when you want to easily, quickly, and beautifully share your post on Medium, but don’t want to broadcast it out to your entire network. Unlike a draft, an unlisted story does not require a Medium account in order to be viewed. You can use Unlisted Publishing for:
- Easily sharing semi-private communications within your company, class, or organization.
- Soliciting feedback on your writing from friends and editors before publishing widely.
- Directly targeting who has access to your story versus notifying your entire Medium network.
Publishing an unlisted story:
After finishing your story, click the “Publish” button. That will open the visibility/license options:

- You can set the visibility to public or unlisted. Unlisted stories will not appear in the home feed, profile page, or search on Medium. It will be viewable to anyone who has the link.
Unlisted stories won’t be on your Medium profile page, appear in the notifications, emails, or on the homepage of your followers,
or be discoverable in search.
After clicking publish, you can copy the URL to share it via email, Twitter, Facebook, or carrier pigeon. Anyone who has the URL can view the story, and users who respond to the story can publicly publish their response. When you are ready to expand your audience, you can go into edit mode and change the story from Unlisted to Public. This will trigger a notification to all your followers and the story will become visible on Medium.
