Greetings,

Today is the second last prompt of the “Time Management” theme.

In this one-week theme, we have learned a lot about “Time Management”. If you haven’t read the earlier prompt about “Procrastination”, here you go.

You will find some great tips to manage your “Procrastination”.

When I started managing my time, I thought about “Multitasking”. Multitasking is being able to perform more than one activity at the same time. To be honest, I am not very good at Multitasking. However, I thought of giving it a try to manage my time.

People think that multitasking is a great way to get more things done in less time. However, for me, it didn’t work out.

I didn’t have any good experience with multitasking. Multitasking can increase your stress level and decrease your ability to focus. Overall, multitasking affects your health and performance.

“Multi-tasking arises out of distraction itself.”

- Marilyn Vos Savant

This is a post about my experience with multitasking.

5 Reasons Why Multitasking is Pointless

  1. Multitasking can reduce your productivity

Multitasking diverts your mind from one task to another. When you try to do different things at the same time, it will make you less productive.

“Even though we think we’re getting a lot done, ironically, multitasking makes us demonstrably less efficient”.

-Daniel Levitin

2. There is a more chance of making mistakes

The brain cannot multitask. Multitasking, when it comes to paying attention, is a myth. The brain naturally focuses on concepts sequentially, one at a time…To put it bluntly, research shows that we can’t multitask. We are biologically incapable of processing information-rich inputs simultaneously…Studies show that a person who is interrupted takes 50 percent longer to accomplish a task. Not only that, he or she makes up to 50 percent more errors.

-John Medina

When you do two tasks at one time, there are more chances of making mistakes.

Multitaskers are mistake makers.

More task equals more mistakes.

3. Multitasking makes you less efficient

Multitasking makes you more stressed and increases your anger and anxiety. It affects your efficiency and the results of your work.

“What looks like multitasking is really switching back and forth between multiple tasks, which reduces productivity and increases mistakes by up to 50 percent”.

-Susan Cain

4. Multitasking can be distracting

Multitasking is a great distraction. While switching from one task to another, you will get distracted. Once, you get distracted you can’t even finish one task.

If you work in the field, where you have to be creative with your work then multitasking is a waste of time for you because you will lose creativity while multitasking.

Today’s prompt is,

Are you a multitasker? Can you handle things efficiently while multitasking? Do you experience any benefits of multitasking? Share your opinions and stories at The Summit.

Share your stories and experiences. Different things work for different people.

“Multi-tasking is great in the kitchen when you are trying to time the chicken to be ready at the same time as the potatoes. But do not assume it is a great way to manage a workday.”

- Joanne Tombrakos

I love the above quote about multitasking. At work, Multitasking slows you down.
