The Scroll’s Guide to Summer 2021 Movies

Summer vacation is practically here! As summer approaches, anticipation is growing for the release of a number of new movies. The following is a list of ten of this summer’s most anticipated films in order of release.
F9
Vin Diesel and John Cena are back with the ninth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise. The film includes appearances from actresses Charlize Theron (Monster, Mad Max: Fury Road) and Helen Mirren (The Queen). In this fast paced action flick, Dominic Toretto and his team battle it out against Toretto’s hitman brother. See it in theaters on June 25.
The Forever Purge
The latest Purge movie is guaranteed to be a horror filled thrill ride. In the film, the Purge has been outlawed, but an angry group of thugs try to bring it back. It is up to on-screen couple Ana de la Reguera and Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama) to stop them. You can see the upcoming film in theaters starting July 2.
Black Widow
This new Avengers origin story follows Natasha Romanoff as she is trained by the KGB, runs from the government, and ultimately becomes the Black Widow. Scarlett Johanssen will reprise her role as the leading lady in this fast paced superhero movie that will hit theaters and Disney Plus on July 9.
Space Jam: A New Legacy
In the sequel to the beloved 1990s film, we will see LeBron James and the Looney Tunes characters join forces to rescue James’ son. The movie is directed by Malcolm D Lee, cousin of cinema legend Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X). It stars Michael B Jordan (Just Mercy, Without Remorse) and features appearances from Jim Carrey (Ace Ventura, The Mask, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Gabriel Iglesias (I’m Not Fat… I’m Fluffy), and Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda, Ocean’s 11). See the upcoming sports comedy on July 16 in theaters and on HBO Max.

Time flies when you’re having fun: but not too much time, right? From acclaimed director M Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable) comes a new mystery starring Alex Wolff (Hereditary, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and Eliza Scanlen (Little Women), in which a family vacations on an island that makes them age through their entire lives in a single day. See the thriller in theaters starting July 23.
The Green Knight
In this spinoff of a classic King Arthur tale, Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire) stars as the king’s ambitious nephew. His character sets out on a risky journey to face the Green Knight in a must-see epic that opens in theaters July 30.
Stillwater
Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting, The Departed, The Martian) stars in Tom McCarthy’s (Spotlight) intriguing crime drama in which he plays an American visiting his daughter in France after she was imprisoned for murder. See the film in theaters beginning July 30.
The Suicide Squad (2)
In this new antihero-lead film, the government uses a team of supervillains to destroy their enemies on a tropical island. The movie features a star studded cast, including Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Bombshell), Jared Leto (Requiem for a Dream, Dallas Buyers Club), Will Smith (Men in Black), Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live), and John Cena (Fast and Furious). Don’t miss it when it comes to theaters on August 6.
Respect
This new drama will star Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls) as the music legend Aretha Franklin. The story will follow Aretha as she grows from a church choir singer into a superstar and one of the most famous singers in history. It opens in theaters on August 13.
Candyman
Produced by Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us), this upcoming movie is the chilling successor to the 1992 horror cult classic of the same title. The film will star Yahya Abdul Mateen II (Aquaman) as Anthony, who grapples with his own sanity as he learns the true identity of the hook-handed Candyman. See it in theaters starting on August 27.
