In this episode, we look at the various outdoor activities near Winston-Salem, from hiking to climbing to rowing.
WINSTON ON THE WEEKENDS SHOWCASES THE MANY ACTIVITIES that make Winston-Salem such a great place to live. Outdoor activities are easily accessible whether enjoying a lakeside picnic and fishing at Salem Lake or taking a short drive to the mountains to hike and camp over the weekend at one of the many State Parks.
Pilot Mountain State Park is a recreational landmark offering hiking trails, camping, picnic areas, and spectacular scenery. Hike or drive to the 2,000 foot summit to enjoy the mountain’s overlook of the Piedmont, Sauratown Mountains and Blue Ridge Mountains. Rock climbing and rappelling are allowed on portions of the park’s steep cliffs. The park offers a 42-site campground with canoe-in sites available. A 6.5-mile trail corridor connects to the Yadkin River. with an extensive trail network, a bridle trail and a canoe trail section on the river.
Enjoy the outdoors at Hanging Rock State Park with a 73-site campground or vacation cabins for longer visits. The park offers picnic grounds and a stocked lake for fishing, swimming, and canoe rentals. There is also access on the Dan River for paddling, 8.4 miles of mountain biking trails and rock climbing opportunities. More than 20 miles of hiking trails weave alongside clear streams and waterfalls with spectacular views of cliffs and plateaus.
Salem Lake has been called the hidden diamond in the city of Winston-Salem. Located minutes away from downtown Winston-Salem, Salem Lake offers a 365-acre lake with pier and boat fishing. A 7-mile trail offers a scenic view of the lake at all times.
Winston-Salem is centrally located for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy a wide variety of weekend activities from the mountains to the beaches. Enjoy your weekends!
