St Hugh’s JCR have delayed the result of a historic motion to decide whether the Junior Common Room, named after Aung San Suu Kyi, should be re-named.

In a meeting attended by close to 100 people, Affnafee Rahman’s proposal to ensure the “Aung San Suu Kyi” common room was unnamed was a hotly debated topic, and was moved to an online vote following calls from students.

It was felt that given the motion — which also called to mandate the JCR committee to petition the principal to write an open letter of condemnation to to Myanmar’s State Counsellor — was a very political one, other students not in attendance should be represented via an online voting system.

As well as delaying a special edition of The Swan, the motion sparked excitement amongst students, which is the latest development in an ongoing saga surrounding the former St Hugh’s student.

The Swan exclusively revealed that Suu Kyi’s portrait was removed by college in September, while also reporting the news that the PPE graduate had been stripped of the Freedom of the city of Oxford last week.

The Swan will be here to publish any updates on the story, and will bring you our special edition when the results are announced.
