Alan Turing: Considered the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence, Turing made significant contributions to the fields of algorithms, computation, and code breaking during World War II. His work laid the foundation for modern computing and his theoretical work on the concept of a universal machine, now known as the Turing Machine, is considered the foundation of theoretical computer science.

Ada Lovelace: Considered the first computer programmer, Lovelace wrote the first algorithm intended to be processed by Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, a general-purpose mechanical computer proposed in the 19th century. Her work on the engine, including her notes on the procedure for calculating Bernoulli numbers, is considered the first published algorithm intended for implementation on a computer.

Grace Hopper: A computer scientist and United States Navy Rear Admiral, Hopper was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer and developed the first compiler, which translated mathematical code into machine code. Hopper also popularized the term “debugging” and made significant contributions to the development of COBOL, one of the first high-level programming languages.

John McCarthy: Considered one of the founders of artificial intelligence, McCarthy is known for his development of the LISP programming language, the first high-level programming language for artificial intelligence research. He also made significant contributions to the fields of logic and theorem proving, and was instrumental in the development of time-sharing systems.

Programming is an art

Linus Torvalds: Creator of the Linux operating system, Torvalds developed Linux while he was a student at the University of Helsinki. Linux is now one of the most widely used open-source operating systems in the world, with applications in servers, supercomputers, mobile devices and embedded systems.

Richard Stallman: Founder of the Free Software Foundation, Stallman is a software freedom activist and programmer who developed the GNU operating system, which is widely used in combination with the Linux kernel to create the popular Linux operating system. He also developed the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) and the GNU Debugger (GDB).

Tim Berners-Lee: The inventor of the World Wide Web, Berners-Lee developed HTML, HTTP and URL, the building blocks of the web, while working at CERN. He also created the first web server, the first web browser and the first web page, which laid the foundation for the modern internet.

Dennis Ritchie: Co-creator of the C programming language and the UNIX operating system, Ritchie made significant contributions to the development of the modern computer, including the creation of the ‘C’ programming language, which is widely used in systems and application software.

Bjarne Stroustrup: Creator of the C++ programming language, Stroustrup developed C++ while working at Bell Labs in the early 1980s. C++ is now one of the most widely used programming languages in the world, with applications in systems programming, video game development, and high-performance computing.

Donald Knuth: A computer scientist and mathematician, Knuth is known for his development of the TeX computer typesetting system and the Metafont font definition language, as well as his work on the analysis of algorithms and the design of programming languages. He is also the author of the multi-volume work The Art of Computer Programming, which is considered a classic in the field.
