Vivaldi : A New Web Browser With More Customization
Are you bored of using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox ? Or, maybe, do you want to try an anti-mainstream web browser ? A new desktop web browser emerged that will be competing with Chrome and Firefox. It is Vivaldi (just like a person name). Yeah, you should try it ! Vivaldi is a freeware desktop web browser that lets you customize the user interface until you find yourself comfortable with it. It is developed by Vivaldi Technologies (a company founded by Opera’s former CEO Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner), initially released on April 6, 2016 as its first stable release and available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
The reason why Vivaldi was created is quoted from its Wikipedia Page :
The browser is aimed at staunch technologists, heavy Internet users, and previous Opera web browser users disgruntled by Opera’s transition from the Presto layout engine to the Blink layout engine, which removed many popular features in the process. Vivaldi aims to revive the old, popular features of Opera 12 and introduce new, more innovative ones. The browser is updated weekly, in the form of “Snapshots”, and has gained popularity since the launch of its first technical preview.
For Chrome & Firefox users, and mostly Opera users, Vivaldi is a really great browser that you should give it a try. Are you curious what features does Vivaldi has ? Let’s look below.
Stylish and Easy-to-Use Speed Dial
Vivaldi’s speed dial is awesome. You can create and name a speed dial group of your favourite websites then apply a background to it. Beside that, inside a group itself, you can also create folders.
Know Websites’ Page Size
When opening a webpage, Vivaldi’s address bar will show the loading progress along with the page downloading size.
This feature allows you to search through your bookmarks, history, and navigate to others like switching tab, open a new tab, open settings, and more using only your keyboard. From here, you will also know the list of shortcuts in Vivaldi. Press F2 to use Quick Commands.
See Other Tab’s Loading Progress
One of Vivaldi’s feature is you can monitor other tab’s loading progress when you are on a tab. This is useful instead of you switch to the other tab to only see whether the page has been loaded fully or not.
Do you always open many tabs at once and feel confused ? Tab Stacking solves your problem. You can stack 2 tabs or more into 1 by simply dragging a tab to other tab then release when the other tab shows a gray background. Right-click on the stackable tabs and select Ungroup Tab Stack / Remove from Tab Stack to ungroup them or remove one from stacking.
Beside Tab Stacking, Vivaldi also has an amazing feature, that is, Tab Tiling. Tab Tiling can be used if there are stackable tabs. It allows us to view 2 pages or more in 1 tab by right-clicking the stackable tabs then select Tile Tab Stack. Yeah, that’s amazing !!. For web developers, you can use Tab Tiling to know if every pages in your website is responsive.
Toggle Panel is used to organize your bookmarks, downloads, notes, and web panel. Bookmarks and downloads may sound mainstream to you but notes and web panel are new features in Vivaldi that you might not find in other browsers.
You can organize your bookmarks through the toggle panel but it is much more efficient and easier if you organize them through Vivaldi’s Bookmark Manager. You can add nickname and description to each of your bookmarks. You are also be able to import bookmarks from other browsers by clicking the Import button. By default, Vivaldi has already give you useful bookmarks in technology, business, news, games, etc.
You can view your downloads through the toggle panel. But for more detail, just navigate to vivaldi://downloads.
You can make notes, put several notes in a folder, and even attach files and screenshots to a note. For example, if you find an important sentence in a website, you can copy and paste it in your note. Or maybe, make a note of your daily activities.
Web Panel is a feature that lets you to view the mobile and desktop version of a webpage. Right-click on the web panel icon to show mobile/desktop version. Unlike Tab Tiling, Web Panel allows you to adjust the size of it. You can add more web panels by clicking the + sign below the Web Panel icon.
Hibernating Background Tabs
If your PC/Laptop has a low capacity of RAM, when you are browsing using Vivaldi, you can hibernate the other tabs by right-clicking on a tab then select Hibernate Background Tabs. The hibernated tabs won’t use your memory until you click on it and it starts to reload.
Save Session For Later Use
You can easily save session for all your open tabs that can be opened at a later time by selecting Save Open Tabs as Session from the File menu. Even after you close Vivaldi and reopen it, you can open your saved session by selecting Open Saved Session.
Rewind and Fast Forward Button
These 2 buttons are actually different from the back and forward button that you usually see in any mainstream browser. The Rewind button is used to go back to the first page of a specific site. For example, at the first, you visit a homepage, then visit the About page, then visit the Contact page, clicking the Rewind button will take you to the homepage (not to the About page). The Fast Forward button is used navigate through a site that has multiple pages. For example, when you are reading an article in a blog, you can read the next article by clicking the Fast Forward button. Fast Forward button is only available for sites that support fast forward navigation.
Yey, we almost get to the end. The last feature that I am so impatient to tell while writing other features above is Customization. You can fully customize Vivaldi until you find one that is comfortable with you. You can do this by going to Settings by pressing Alt + P. In Settings, you can do the following things :
- Apply a theme
- Set the position of address bar and tab bar (at the left / right / top / bottom side). Awesome !! Anti-Mainstream !!
- Set tab colors, options, and features (tab stacking, pinned tabs, tab cycling)
- Set what page to be display on startup, language, and homepage
- and many more..
Beside customizing through Settings, you can do so through the status bar. The status bar is placed at the bottom. You can adjust the zoom setting, set page tiling, toggle images (show images, show only cached image, no image), and page actions (content blocker, CSS debugger, filter, transition, etc). If the are no status bar at the bottom, you can show it through Settings by clicking Appearance and select Show Status Bar in the status bar section.
Other Vivaldi’s Features
1. Developer tools (Inspect Element)
2. Tab Discarding. Disable it by going to vivaldi://flags and search for tab discarding
4. It is lightweight, same as Opera, than Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox
Okay, that’s all about Vivaldi and its features. Amazing right ? It is a really recommended browser. Why should you not give a try ? The only disadvantage is it is not available for mobile. You can download Vivaldi from the official website : Link. Don’t forget to post a thread at its Community if you found a problem. Happy Customizing and Browsing !!!
