In every electronic device, there are two components: the hardware, which can be physically touched, and the software, which is a set of programs essential for the hardware to function.

To communicate with the device, there is a software interface that connects the hardware and the software. Firmware is a specific type of software that is embedded into every hardware device, controlling its behavior and enabling its fancy features and security.

There are several layers of software on any electronic device, such as firmware, the Android operating system, and mobile apps. While software is used to perform specific activities, firmware is used for the main functions of the device. Firmware updates are occasionally necessary to ensure that the device operates correctly, fixing bugs and altering programs for the consumer’s benefit. Each hardware manufacturer releases several firmware updates during the product’s lifecycle.

Updating firmware annually is crucial, not only for better performance but also for increased security. According to Jack Andrew from Liquid Sky, “Firmware update can provide fixes to any performance issues that may occur. With the ever-changing advances in technology, a firmware update also helps a device remain competitive with newer models.” Hackers are known to exploit outdated firmware vulnerabilities, making firmware updates an important aspect of device security.

Below is a list of devices that may require firmware updates:

  • Modems and routers for internet connection
  • Wireless access points for internet connectivity
  • All computers and servers
  • All printing and scanning devices
  • Cameras and security monitoring systems
  • VOIP PBX systems and VOIP phones
  • Any other devices directly connected to the internet

Company leaders must understand the importance of updated and revised products. We highly recommend booking an appointment with your existing IT company or contacting us to send a qualified engineer to check and update your hardware devices on-site. Updating four devices takes a minimum of one hour, and an additional 15 minutes will be added for each device after the first hour.

We highly recommend updating the firmware on your hardware regularly or contacting a qualified engineer to do it for you.
