Introduction

Bard, the highly anticipated Chat GPT rival developed by Google, has experienced a significant setback in the past couple of days. The cause of this setback was a single yet significant mistake made by the Chatbot model. The error in question was the AI returning an incorrect answer to one of the questions posed to it. This single mistake had a massive impact on Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., causing a significant drop in its market value. Astonishingly, this mistake resulted in a loss of 9% of Alphabet’s market value, which roughly amounts to an estimated $100 billion dollars.

The $100 billion dollar mistake

Recently, Google unveiled a demo post for their latest product, Bard, the cutting-edge Chatbot AI model. Unfortunately, during the demo, the AI system provided a faulty answer for one of the questions related to telescopes, specifically in answering the question of which telescope has taken the first image of an exoplanet(shown in the image below). The mistake was later discovered by experts in the field, but the damage was already done.

The error made by the AI system had a significant impact on the perception of the company and its latest product. It raised concerns about the accuracy and reliability of the AI system, and many investors lost faith in the project. As a result, many investors chose to withdraw their support, causing a sharp decline in Bard’s market share.

This unfortunate event highlights the importance of accuracy and reliability in AI systems and the consequences of mistakes made by these systems. The trust of investors is crucial to the success of any project or product, and a single error can have a profound impact on a company’s reputation and financial performance.

Lately, I’ve been using Chat GPT as my go-to search engine for finding information and answers to various questions. But after the recent error made by Bard, I’m starting to question my reliance on these AI systems. The mistake made by Bard has shown me that even the most advanced AI models are not immune to making mistakes.

The reason for this is that the AI model can generate answers and information based on the data it has been trained on, which gives it a certain level of flexibility and creativity. However, this also increases the possibility of error.

All in all, this recent incident has made me reconsider my use of AI systems for obtaining information and answers. While they have the potential to make our lives easier, it’s important to keep in mind their limitations and the potential risks associated with relying on them.

Will Bard overtake Chat GPT in the near future?

Despite the recent setback caused by this unfortunate mistake, it’s too soon to declare Bard out of the competition, as similar mistakes could still occur with existing chatbots like Chat GPT.

With that said, it is worth mentioning that Bard will come with its own advantages over Chat GPT. One of Bard’s key advantages over Chat GPT is that it will be trained on up-to-date data rather than being limited to information from the year 2021, like Chat GPT. Although this may seem like a minor benefit, I firmly believe that this advantage could make a significant impact as long as Chat GPT remains untrained on data newer than 2021

With that said, we can only wait and see what happens to this state of art chatbot and ask ourselves, “How will Google fix such an issue?”
