A few mysteries unravelled about light
There was a time when I used to tutor Physics and Mathematics to 15 and 16 year olds. While one day I was explaining 3 different states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) to my students, when one of them raised his hand and asked, “Mam, what is light?” and she was right as light does not contain particles like those found in different matters of solid, liquid, and gas found here on earth.
Light of the world is basically an electromagnetic wave carrying energy as it flows from one point to another. However, recent researches show that there are lots of things about light we are not aware of.
A few Irish researchers have come across an entirely “new form” of light which has the potential to alter our existing thoughts involving this electromagnetic wave. The findings have been mentioned in a Scientific Journal posted on “Science Advances.”
There’s something mentioned about angular momentum that primarily calculates how fast something is travelling around its own axes. Tiny particles of light, known as photons move through space while twisting and turning around its own axes.
Initially, it was believed that this light of the world moved with a constant speed around its axes; however, the researchers at the Trinity College came to discover that under specific environmental conditions, its spinning rate can change too.
According to the leading researcher Paul Eastham who stated to CNN:
“It’s a bit like a tiny, light merry-go-round at a playground. It goes round and round, which is more or less they way people understood light to work. We thought it was impossible for a photon to send you halfway round, but it turns out, it’s not.”
He also included
“What I think is so exciting about this result is that even this fundamental property of light, that physicists have always thought was fixed, can be changed.”
The latest findings are still in their early stage and trying to come up with more innovations for our everyday lifestyle.
This is more likely going to provide internet connections at higher speeds while also ensuring stronger network security. Both of which will be welcomed by all. Light of the world is still a mystery, and I wonder what other new things we are yet to find out.
