A record breaking DDoS attack!

Cyber hacking is becoming epidemic and more severe with the passage of time, especially the DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack that has reached an alarming stage and capable of permanently destabilizing the services provided by the online companies.

Quite recently, the internet experienced one of the largest DDoS attacks that exceeded above 1Tb/s. OVH, a French provider of hosting services had suffered previously, and now the latest victim is Dyn DNS provider.

Few globally recognized websites such as Twitter, Spotify, Github had suffered power loss recently; the reason was due to the attack against the Dyn, a globally recognized DNS.

The DNS functions by serving as an internet phonebook by pinpointing the domain names to their IP addresses respectively.

Furthermore, the Dyn DNS is extremely popular on Twitter, Reddit, Paypal, Github etc as their upstream DNS provider. The latest DDoS invasion led to the power outage of these websites altogether.

ACCORDING TO THE STATEMENT GIVEN BY DYN:

“This attack is mainly impacting US East and is impacting Managed DNS customers in this region. Our Engineers are continuing to work on mitigating this issue.

Starting at 11:10 UTC on October 21th-Friday 2016 we began monitoring and mitigating a DDoS attack against our Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure. Some customers may experience increased DNS query latency and delayed zone propagation during this time. Updates will be posted as information becomes available.
