Apple Will Unveil a New 4-inch iPhone 5se in March

A new report claims that instead of releasing a 4-inch iPhone 6c, the company is working on an upgraded version of 5s, named “iPhone 5se” (special edition).

The arrival of new iPhone 5se would be a good news for people who feel the iPhone 6 and 6s are just too big for them and liked the smaller iPhone screens the older ones had. Apparently, the “se” refers to “special edition” and points to a phone that looks and feels fundamentally the same to the 5s, however, has all new internals and software that would make it parallel to that of the 6 and 6s.

The existing iPhone 5s was released way back in fall 2013.

Sources have provided the following list of “iPhone 5se” upgrades over the 5s to 9to5Mac:

  • The chamfered, shiny edges have been replaced with curved glass like on the iPhone 6 and 6s lines
  • The same 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.2-megapixel front camera systems from the iPhone 6
  • Support for larger panoramas and autofocus for video recording
  • Barometer for tracking elevation in the Health app
  • An NFC chip for Apple Pay
  • The A8 and M8 chips from the iPhone 6
  • Bluetooth 4.2, VoLTE, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi chips from the iPhone 6s
  • Live Photos from the iPhone 6s
  • Same Silver, Space Gray, Gold, & Rose Gold color options as the 6s line

While Live Photos on the 6s influences 3D Touch, the “5se’s” screen will be indistinguishable to that of the 2013 model and not pressure-sensitive. However, there’s no indication whether this new device will be plastic or not.

The new device is presently in production overseas and is planned for a late March or early April release.
