Google buys HTC’s Pixel team for $1.1 billion

While tech companies like Apple or Samsung make their own smartphones, Google has to depend on third parties like LG or HTC to make their phones. HTC has just announced that Google is spending $1.1 billion in order to buy HTC’s Pixel team. The team, meaning, not the full team of HTC, rather as CFO Peter Shen put it, half of the 4,000 employees from HTC’s RND team will join Google to make Google’s phones. The deal worth $1.1 billion will be made early next year.

Regarding this huge deal, HTC’s co-founder and CEO Cher Wang said in a statement that, “This agreement is a brilliant next step in our longstanding partnership, enabling Google to supercharge their hardware business while ensuring continued innovation within our HTC smartphone and Vive virtual reality businesses.” Besides that, HTC also said that “Google will continue to have access to HTC’s IP to support the Pixel smartphone family,”

It is a bold step that Google has taken to make its own smartphones through its own team. Coming on October 4 Google is going to unveil its next Pixel phones under the names of Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.
