This is what happens when you prefer computers over human

It’s not even been a week after Facebook announced that it had eliminated handwritten description from its trending topic section based on the criticism of promoting biased content. The company even reportedly fired as many as 18 employees responsible for writing the description as well as assuring the legibility of the sources it uses. And now, we’re watching the immediate backfire of its own algorithm.

The disaster started with a hilarious mix-up. A video from iHeartViral.com went viral that was showing a dog’s reaction after seeing its owner after two years. And the Trending Topics module put that video under the title Watch Dogs 2– an upcoming video game based on cybersecurity and hacking.

The situation has become more disastrous when a fake news story about FOX News Commentator Megyn Kelly landed on top of the trending list entitled: “BREAKING: Fox News Exposes Traitor Megyn Kelly, Kicks Her Out For Backing Hillary.” While the truth is Megyn Kelly hasn’t endorsed Hillary for president and is still working at FOX News.

If you’re still not entertained enough by Facebook’s fallible algorithm, there are more. There’s a headline read: “SNL Star Calls Ann Coulter a Racist C*nt,” referring to attacks on the author during a Comedy Central roast of actor Rob Lowe. Not only that, the algorithm also picked another trending item pegged to Twitter hashtag #McChicken, which had gone viral after someone posted a video of a man performing a sexual act on himself with his McChicken sandwich. Marvelous!

Just as before, Facebook was fast to remove these objectionable contents. However, the damage has been done. Thousands of people are now convinced of that fact that Megyn Kelly is voting Hillary Clinton in the upcoming US President election. Let’s just hope that people won’t stop having McChicken sandwiches.
