Your next pair of Adidas might be “Made in USA”

Earlier this year, Adidas started to test its robot at a purpose built Speedfactory in its native country Germany. Along with it, the footwear giant also revealed there would be another Speedfactory in the U.S, scheduled to open in 2017. Yesterday, it revealedmore details about this project.

The automated production facility will be situated in Atlanta and will be called Atlanta home. It features 74,000 square feet of robot shoemaking capability and is set to be fully operational by the end of 2017. Adidas says it has the target to make 50,000 pairs of shoes per year, pretty small fraction for such company that made 301 million pairs last year.

“Equipped with cutting-edge manufacturing technologies, the U.S. factory enables Adidas to create products in increasingly high volumes with advanced complexity in color, materials and sizes,”the company said in a release.

The most important factor is, probably, this Speedfactory allows Adidas less depend on Asian facilities, some of which have been investigated for wicked labor practices. It also comes with “endless opportunities for customization in America.”

This automated production facility will be beneficial for humans too. Adidas says it will create 160 jobs for the human worker, presumably to keep those robots in check.
