YouTube Rolls Out Live 360-Degree VR Video

The Alphabet-owned company YouTube has debuted support for 360-degree live streaming video support and spatial audio. The roll out announcement was made during the annual Coachella music festival. The two features intend to enhance the general experience you have while watching a so-called immersive video.

“What excites me most about 360-degree storytelling is that it lets us open up the world’s experiences to everyone. Students can now experience news events in the classroom as they unfold.”

Neal Mohan, chief product officer for YouTube touted potential outcomes of the update.

“Travelers can experience faraway sites and explorers can deep-sea dive, all without the physical constraints of the real world. … What were once limited experiences are now available to anyone, anywhere, at any time.”

Virtual reality and 360-degree videos have gotten to be one of the most smoking things in the tech industry nowadays. Not only YouTube but also Facebook is multiplying down on their efforts. Yet rather than showing you videos of long past, YouTube now needs you to be there right when it happens. YouTube is already working with companies like VideoStitch and Two Big Ears to make software compatible with YouTube’s platform.

According to YouTube, the new feature will give you a listening experience just like in real life, providing distance, depth, and intensity to go along with what you are seeing.

Mohan also said people who are interested in testing out these capabilities can visit one of the company’s YouTube Space
