Apple Logo in red

The blue pill story about the Apple logo is that it pays tribute to Alan Turing, pioneer of the modern-day computer.

Turing died after eating an apple laced with cyanide in 1954.

Other theories include the apple symbolizing knowledge, as it does in the story of Adam and Eve.

It’s also considered a nod to the apple that fell under the weight of gravity upon Sir Issac Newton’s skull, as was depicted in Ronald Wayne’s first Apple logo designed in 1976.

What’s The Real Story Behind The Apple Logo?

But, in a 2009 interview with CreativeBits, Rob Janoff, the artist commissioned to redesign the Apple logo in 1977 said that none of the mentioned stories have anything to do with his logo.

They’re urban legends.

Janoff said he received no specific guidance from Steve Jobs, and doesn’t recall why he chose the outline of an apple.

But Janoff can confirm the reason for the bite, and it’s quite boring.

Janoff says the bite exists for scaling.

So when the Apple logo is shrunk down, it still resembles an apple and not a cherry.

That’s it.

No romanticism or fantasy here.

Just a straight up scaling issue.
