Reflector Entertainment: The Masters of Tandem Story Telling | TTH
What are we if not the sum of our memories “we are the stories we live, the tales we tell ourselves,” Clay Kaczmarek.
Kaczmarek coined one of the most prolific lines in the history of video games, which delves into the very premise behind gaming and the impact it has on our lives. Videogames over the years have evolved and come a long way from the early Atari 2600 running the pioneering RPG game Adventure to modern day classics such as the highly acclaimed Fumito Ueda masterpiece, ICO. In the 80’s, when Hideo Kojima invented Metal Gear, gamers were exposed to a new generation of gaming, one which revolved around storytelling. The Metal Gear Solid series showed the world the impact of storytelling and the extent to which it can influence the way a game is perceived. However, in the past few decades, franchises have begun to broaden their range by incorporating other platforms into their medium. As is evident with the Pokémon franchise which, after starting out as a game for the Nintendo Game boy platform, almost immediately branched out into an anime followed by a print Manga and several movies that have transformed it into the phenomenon it is today. In fact, several franchises have tried this formula over the years but their efforts have had lackluster results, creating a need for improvement on a large scale. It is to this end that Alexandre Amancio, the former creative director at Ubisoft and the brains behind their Assassin’s Creed Revelations and Unity titles, decided to create something along similar lines but with one major difference: rather than reiterate the franchise’s existence through accessing platforms, he intends to define it through those channels.
To bring this concept to reality, Alex, along with Canadian entrepreneur and the founder of Cirque de Soleil Guy Laliberte, founded Reflector Entertainment. The motive behind the inception of this company is to create a media universe spread across multiple platforms including film, games, and television, and to build an elaborate, intricate and interlocking storyline filled with a myriad of rich elements and details. With much experience to leverage from the field of gaming and entertainment in general, Reflector Entertainment uses the popular Unity creation engine to craft this new concept.“Our entire concept is based on a new approach to storytelling and tandem media deployment, fostering engagement across multiple platforms: this is really the crux of what we are doing at Reflector,” explains Alex. To this end Reflector Entertainment leverages the expertise of top cross platform talent which, coupled with that of its own devoted employees, enhances the company’s potential as a media firm. “Our mission is to continue collaborating with creative visionaries to produce content for film, television, and video games, that resonates, reverberates and expands,”Alex says. Reflector Entertainment’s unique approach involves the telling of stories in tandem across multiple platforms. This way of storytelling, according to Alex, will demand more involvement from its fans and will allow them to access the particular medium in such a way that they will perceive it on their own accord. This in turn will influence the storyline itself and create a deeper connection between a particular franchise and its followers, thereby enhancing the creative process behind it.
By Partnering with expert talent from across platforms, Reflector Entertainment’s motive is to bring out more complex storylines and deeper characters and details associated with them, making the universe more alive and active. “Reflector is, first and foremost, an IP company allowing us to treat every media component of a given IP as a primary acquisition channel, also cross-promoting one another and harnessing the power of today’s rich media landscapes to build our story worlds,” explains Alex. For the development phase itself, Reflector Entertainment promotes a free environment which encourages its own in-house developers as well as outside talent to bring in their creative ideas. The company also allows a certain degree of control to their talent pool on the projects that they undertake. Reflector Entertainment’s first two universes, which will be spread across multiple media platforms, will include a film, video game, novel trilogy, graphic novel and podcast series. All will be brought to life in the next 24 to 36 months. Reflector Entertainment has a keen eye on Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality and could actually change the face of the gaming industry. Alex intends to leverage these technologies to explore the possibilities of physical based venues such as projection and holograms. “Ultimately, we aim to define the future of entertainment and storytelling,” Alex says.
