In honor of the Filipinos’ five-century milestone in writing national literary pieces, Philippine Science High School-Caraga Region Campus (PSHS-CRC) commemorated the National Literature Month by implementing an educational summit filled with talks, activities, and competitions participated by the PSHS-CRC community of scholars and teachers.

Spearheaded by the English Unit, this year’s National Literature Month aimed to further promote and revitalize the scholars’ appreciation of literature as a complementary and necessary educational tool in developing their ability to think critically about local history and literature, with the theme “500 Years of Writing the Filipino World: A Caraganon Vantage Point.”

To kickstart the three-day summit, the program commenced with the parade of literary characters from the students with different themes, depending on the mandate for each grade level, and the PSHS-CRC personnel from the Student Services, Finance and Administration, and Curriculum and Instruction divisions.

After the parade of literary characters, an awarding ceremony for the victors of the 10th Hippo International English Language Olympiad and the Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) 2022 was conducted.

On the second day of the celebration, the Digital Poster Making Contest and DIY Big Books Vlog Competition will be participated by representatives from grades 7–12. The top three winners of the competitions shall receive plaques of commendation and certificates of participation, while the digital poster with the most reactions on Facebook will be awarded a special prize.

Consequently, the celebration will be concluded in the third and last day with the Regional Writers’ Conference Culmination Program with five honorable guests, namely Professor Adelyne M. Costelo-Abrea PhD, Dr. Fernando A. Almeda Jr., Father Joesilo C. Amalla, Mr. Danilo A. Duncano, CPA, and Professor Sonia Rosales-Low, EDD.

The celebration of April as the National Literature Month was declared in Presidential Proclamation No. 968 s. 2015, which highlighted the importance of contributing to the promotion, conservation, popularization of cultural heritage and artistic creations, and the mainstreaming of gender initiatives in the context of national and international literary works.

Moreover, this event was also conducted in line with the official mandate of the Philippine Science High School System (PSHSS).

Pursuant to the PSHS vision, it is the system’s obligation to prepare the scholars in becoming globally competitive and to be the leading science high school in the Asia Pacific region.

Honoring the National Literature Month fulfilled this as it encouraged scholars to think analytically about different topics, aside from that in the fields of STEM, from a range of different theoretical perspectives and stirred active participation in competitive activities.
