To broaden their scope on biodiversity and build fundamental skills for biological research, the Philippine Science High School-Caraga Region Campus (PSHS-CRC) Biology Unit conducted a three-day biology and agricultural fieldwork activity for Biology 3 students held last March 6–8.

Over 40 scholars traveled to Surigao del Norte to explore the diversity of fauna and flora in several areas, encompassing lake, forest, mangrove, and grassland ecosystems.

The field trip kickstarted with a short tour of the Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) Processing Plant in the municipality of Jabonga, where students observed the mechanisms and processes behind the production of coconut oil and other complementary goods.

Next, the students proceeded to Lake Mainit and Mapaso Hot and Cold Spring Resort to test the water quality and assess the cleanliness of the areas. In the afternoon, a forest assessment was conducted at JB Nature Farm & Resort.

On the second day, a seminar on organic farming was hosted by Engr. Woodrow Escobal, one of the farm’s owners and an advocate for sustainable farming.

According to Engr. Escobal, JB Nature Farm & Resort established an institution of sustainable organic farming in Surigao through continuous research on the latest trends in agriculture.
