In late March 2021, the Department of Health in Caraga confirmed that an overseas Filipino Worker who has returned to Surigao del Sur contracted the B117 variant or commonly known as the UK variant of SARS-CoV2 virus. Two other patients in Bislig City and Buenavista are under suspicion of also carrying the variant, which is believed to be more infectious.

The B117 variant is believed to be more lethal than other variants of SARS-CoV2. A study on the variant concludes that it has a 55% higher hazard of death upon infection compared to other variants. It also spreads more easily than other variants. Experts assure, however, that vaccines are still potent against B117 and previous infections should still deter infection from B117.

Caraganons are urged to be more cautious in their activities outside their homes. They are urged to practice social distancing and keep personal protective equipment worn at all times. It is advised that inessential activities or activities that require interaction should not be continued. Individuals who feel unwell are advised to self-quarantine and if possible, inquire for a swab test in a COVID testing center.
