Publish Your Work: Stop Procrastinating and Start Doing

If you talk too much, you are doing yourself a disservice.

We’ve all had some projects we started but never finished. Sometimes we procrastinate because we overthink. What if we made shitty projects? What if people don’t like it? What if I can’t do it? It’s all in your head.

Let me set this straight: You will fail. You suck at what you are doing. You won’t make it. Unless you stop procrastinating and start putting in the effort. Do genuine hard work.

Here’s how you can start to publish your work, stop procrastinating, and start doing.

1. Stop talking about it

As simple as that. Don’t go around telling your ideas to people. Start getting things done. Don’t try to make it sound great before it’s even made. Make it, ship it, then you can talk about it. Don’t do the opposite.

2. Don’t be afraid of sharing your work

What’s the purpose of creating something if you’re just going to keep it for yourself? Unless it is something personal, like a diary, for example. Getting your work out and receiving feedback is what makes you better at your craft.

And to be honest, in the beginning, your work won’t be seen by a lot of people anyways. So don’t be afraid of being judged, nobody cares. Ship it, then make it better or move on to your next project.

3. Don’t think about the social acceptance

If you are sharing your project for the sake of likes, comments, retweets, or even to get viral, you won’t get much fulfillment from doing it. Focusing on social validations will not help you get better. Focusing on your craft will get you better and will take you further down the road.

4. It’s okay to share ugly work

If in the future you are don’t like your project, you can just delete it from your portfolio. You can just scrap the project and throw it away — it’s in the past, move on.

So when you have doubts about whether to publish things or not, just share it. Remember point number 2: nobody cares about your work.

5. Keep creating and publishing

Once you're done with your first project, move on to the next one. When you consistently create and share your work, you can see how much you have progressed over time. In my case, as a designer, I love to see how much I’ve grown since I started my career back in 2015.

By doing this, you will have a sense of achievement. You would realize that for the past few years you weren’t wasting your time and that you’ve learned a ton. You are grinding hard at life.

It’s all in your head

Having a full-time job while doing side projects is hard. Simply because you need to pour in the time, effort, and passion to do it. That is why a lot of people have always said that they are “working on something” but never actually finished or published their project.

I would always root for people who do side projects because I understand how much effort they need to put in. But if they talk too much but don’t get things done, the admiration would disappear. Especially if it happens frequently. I could no longer see them reliable or trustworthy, professionally speaking.
