Newbie Tips:

  1. No parking pass is required, but a backcountry permit is required to camp overnight in North Cascades National Park.
  2. Reservations can be submitted from March 15th to April 30th for camping between the dates of May 15th through September 30th. Otherwise, try your luck on a weekday for walk-up permits at the ranger station.
  3. Best time to go is early August through late September. Check WTA trip report and weather conditions prior to going, and bring microspikes if out of season.
  4. Pack extra layers and prepare for sudden weather changes. The high altitude and wind can make it very cold at night.
  5. Enjoy wild berries along the trail during berry season Aug-Sept.
  6. Check our detailed list of ultralight gear for Sahale Arm (2 people, overnight).
Trek through the valley following the trail of colorful wildflowers and enjoy the surrounding peaks.
Making our way up Doubtful Lake — we had not realized that the steepest part of our trail was still ahead of us.
We were surrounded by mountain peaks. Some of the best views were unexpectedly behind us. Don’t forget to look back!
Everything about this hike is stunning.
Metropolitan Market “The Cookie”
Made it to Sahale Glacier Camp just in time for sunset
Sunset from the tent at Sahale Glacier Camp
Spot Mt. Rainier on a clear day in the background.
A strenuous hike with rewarding views that will more than amply repay your efforts.
