We want to use this blog to encourage similar minded readers curious about outdoor adventures to start the first journey.

Included are our top action packed destinations with a carefully planned and researched gear list and newbie tips to stay safe and make the most of your new experience.

Season: Late June — Early October

Duration: 1 day

Distance: 10.9 miles | out and back

Elevation gain: +3000 ft

Trail map: Gaia GPS Map

Adventure Rating:

8 / 10

Newbie Tips:

  1. Fantastic day hike or backpacking trip in the Alpine Lake Wilderness. This can be your last minute backpacking backup plan if you were not able to secure permits for the Enchantments. Lots of campsites to choose from, first come first serve! Note: camping is not allowed at the lake.
  2. Total distance of approximately 9 miles per WTA, but our Gaia GPS and plotted 10.6miles. Minor difference, but be prepared for a moderate to difficult day hike. Expect 2.5hours up and total hike time shy of 5 hours for normal human beings.
  3. Watch for mountain goats. They hang out around you in a peaceful manner. Probably a good idea to keep your distance.
  4. Parts of the hike are pretty exposed, recommend sun screen/hat on a hot day.
  5. Navigation gets a bit tricky towards the end. As usual, Gaia GPS will serve you well. Check our route.
  6. Check our detailed list of gears : Lake Ingalls (2people, day hike)
This is one of the most beautiful day hikes in Washington. Its especially popular in the fall season, but our weekday trip was quiet.
Esmeralda Peaks in the background. Feels like the backyard of the Enchantments.
Getting pretty hot!
