Even if you know exactly what you’re taking, drug use is never safe — that said, it’s much safer when you do.

Through the work of organisations such as WEDINOS, The Loop, and SaferParty, we know a little more about the drugs in circulation. The report provided below is a summary of their findings over the last week. This report is primarily UK-focused and couldn’t possibly cover everything, so if you find something I’ve missed please contact me and I’ll get it updated.

The absence of a product from this list doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be there; you might have something more dangerous than anything listed, but it just hasn’t been reported yet. A vital tool for any drug user is a testkit, which allows you to identify roughly what is actually in your stash. You can find them here and if you need any help interpreting your results, DoseTest also offers a result resource here.

Final note: This report does not constitute medical advice. Some harm-reduction tips are offered, but if in doubt then for God’s sake, seek medical attention.

Standing Warnings

As the drug supply has degraded, our list of standing warnings has grown. Rather than give you the same information at the top of every report, you can find a dedicated article here and we’ll tell you here of any updates.

Warning: Mislabelled Substance

Substance: MDA
Sold as: MDMA
Location: Utrecht
Advice: As you might expect from the name, MDMA is incredibly closely-related to MDMA, the only difference being one methyl group, and their effects are similarly comparable. MDA is generally described as mildly psychedelic and less stimulating than MDMA, but more “lovey” and more potent, milligram for milligram, than its more-famous sibling.

With all that in mind, there isn’t much harm reduction advice to offer here that wouldn’t apply to regular MDMA use around starting low, going slow and so on. You can reagent-test for such a substitution, but given their similarity the options are pretty limited. You’ll need to dig around in the back of your fridge for Simons’ reagent, which will turn red>brown in the presence of MDA but will give a dark blue response to MDMA.

Warning: Mislabelled Substance

Substance: 4-CMC
Sold as: MDMA
Location: Utrecht
Advice: The risk of accidental overdose with this stuff seems to be a lot less present than the likes of NEP (think back to methylone for a better comparison), but it seems to be pretty unpleasant stuff with deeply concerning capacity for long term harm.

This means that there isn’t much for us to suggest in terms of in-the-moment harm reduction beyond the usual (start low / go slow, don’t redose if it’s not working for you etc) and to test your pills.

In this case, we can spot it with a simple Marquis test — MDMA will turn your reagent purple/black, whereas 4-CMC won’t have much of a reaction at all.

Warning: Mislabelled Substance

Substance: 3-CMC, caffeine and unknown substances
Sold as: MDMA
Location: Vienna
Advice: The advice from the above sample would largely apply here too, if not for those unknown drugs that are also present. With them in the mix, there’s no reasonable harm reduction advice that can be offered but to avoid this altogether or send it in for testing with the likes of WEDINOS, who are able to identify more substances.

Warning: High Dose — 232mg

Substance: MDMA
Location: Vienna
Advice: These pills are generally intended to contain more than one dose and as such, most come with a breakline. If you spot a pill on The Trip report, odds are you’ll want to snap it and have a half or even less to have the best experience.

Once you’re already up, you’ll want to avoid redosing, stay cool and maintain adequate hydration. Many users will dehydrate through sweat, but sweating also sheds electrolytes and some users have suffered from hyponatremia from drinking only water to replenish themselves. If possible, find a sports drink like Lucozade or, if no other solutions are available, add a pinch of salt to the occasional glass of water.

MDMA info: https://psychonautwiki.org/wiki/MDMA

Warning: Adulterated Substance

Substance: MDMA and amphetamine
Sold as: MDMA
Location: Barcelona
Advice: Looks like the trend I was worried about is happening — this pill contains a perfectly serviceable 173mg of MDMA as well as 10mg of speed. This is concerning because it adds a lot of complicating factors to the experience and pretty significantly increases many of the risks. While speed may not contribute to a standard “overdose” response, it could be a major contributing factor to pretty much every other bit of harm that MDMA can do — the risk of overheating, heart issues, panic attacks and neurotoxicity are all increased by this bizarre addition.

The combination might not be too immediately obvious if you take it, though — so long as you practice basic harm reduction protocols like starting low and going slow (as you’d have to anyway, given the solid dose of MDMA in this pill) it’ll be pretty similar to a normal roll with an extra stimulant edge that some folk may like, but most would rather avoid.

As with any combination of drugs, this can be a bit tougher to test for than a straightforward substitution. Your best bet would be to use Simon’s reagent, which MDMA would turn dark blue and which speed would turn red/brown. The combination of the two should give you a horrible mottled colour that’ll differentiate it from the real deal.

Amphetamine info: https://psychonautwiki.org/wiki/Amphetamine

Warning: Mislabelled Substance

Substance: Caffeine and amphetamine
Sold as: MDMA
Location: Barcelona
Advice: Amphetamine presents a specific risk of anxiety symptoms, as the stimulant effects of amphetamine are more potent at equivalent dose than those of MDMA, and unmoderated by MDMA’s empathogenic (loved-up) effects.

Fortunately, since this is such a long-standing substitution, the reagent testing around it is incredibly solid. Marquis reagent will turn orange/red in the presence of amphetamine (it’s unresponsive to caffeine, so that won’t affect the results) and purple-black when exposed to MDMA.

Warning: High Dose — 241–253mg

Substance: MDMA
Location: Bern
Advice: These pills are generally intended to contain more than one dose and as such, most come with a breakline. If you spot a pill on The Trip report, odds are you’ll want to snap it and have a half or even less to have the best experience.

Warning: Ludicrously Variable Dose — 71–286mg

Substance: MDMA
Location: Bern, Vienna and Barcelona
Advice: These pills are generally intended to contain more than one dose and as such, most come with a breakline. If you spot a pill on The Trip report, odds are you’ll want to snap it and have a half or even less to have the best experience.

As this press appears to have a huge range of doses, I would strongly advise breaking them up even more finely and adopting start-low-go-slow to work up to the desired experience. After all, the window stated above is only for the samples we have — there could be pills out there that are far weaker or stronger than these.

Warning: Adulterated Substance

Substance: MDMA and mephedrone
Sold as: MDMA
Location: Bern, Stockport, Vienna, Birmingham
Advice: This curious adulteration, like one reported previously, contains a relatively small dose of MDMA and a full average dose of mephedrone (a rarer and more expensive substance, even after the beating the MDMA market has taken) on top, which leaves it pretty potent if a little stimmier than expected.

While cathinone adulteration is pretty much the worst-case scenario for MDMA as far as testing is concerned, mephedrone is where we actually get a little lucky — it’s one of the very few drugs whose reaction to Marquis reagent is still visible even when mixed with MDMA. MD turns the reagent an immediate purple/black, but mephedrone will cause it to fizz, which will still be visible even in this strange mix.

Warning: Mislabelled Substance

Substance: Amphetamine
Sold as: Cocaine
Location: Biel
Advice: Oooft, this is concerning — not only is amphetamine much more potent per milligram than cocaine, this amphetamine is much more potent than you’d see anywhere on the street. At approximately 87% pure, this packs about double the punch you’d expect from pure flake coke, not to mention generally being a more stimulating and anxious experience.

The physical risks of these drugs are pretty analogous (double the punch notwithstanding), but there are distinct psychological differences in their subjective experiences which mean that this sample is much more likely to lead to panic attacks or other anxiety symptoms during your time with them. Fortunately, they’re pretty easy to test for: cocaine doesn’t respond to Marquis reagent, whereas amphetamine will turn it a reddy-brown colour.

Warning: Adulterated Substance

Substance: Cocaine (17.4%), Heroin (5.4%), Ketamine (1.6%)
Sold as: Cocaine
Location: Zurich
Advice: While the combination of cocaine and heroin is alarming in general, there is so little of either in this sample that you’d almost certainly notice that something is wrong before it presents any immediate danger to you. There isn’t a lot of harm reduction advice to offer past that point though — mixing stims and opiates like this is one of the riskiest drug combinations going at the best of times, and having them pre-mixed (rather than having a bump of coke then a bump of H etc) even more so.

This will, at least, be pretty obvious under a simple Marquis test. With such a weak sample the response may not be obvious, but heroin will turn your reagent a reddish-purple while coke won’t respond to it at all.

Warning: Mislabelled Substance

Substance: pF4-MAR
Sold as: Adderall
Location: Caernarfon, Falmouth
Advice: After decades of near-mythical status in the darkest corners of the psychonautic internet, aminorexes have been starting to show up in some of the strangest places. This particular stuff, however, parafluoru-4-methylaminorex, is pretty much unknown (a PubMed link in the info section is never a good sign — there are a couple of Bluelight threads but they’re somehow even more chemistry-heavy).

As you can guess, I don’t have a lot of specific info to offer you about this stuff — regular 4-MAR seems to turn Marquis reagent slowly orange rather than the immediate red/brown of amphetamine, but I don’t know if that carries across to this cousin. If in doubt, send it in for testing and let me know what it’s like, I guess?

Warning: Mislabelled Substance (apparently a Rolex)

Substance: 2C-B
Sold as: MDMA
Location: Madrid
Advice: It’s entirely possible that this was actually sold as 2C-B, but given that it’s in the same press as a lot of MDMA and MDA pills in the area (and sometimes approaching the same size, confusingly), it’s probably worth mentioning here.

2C-B is generally considered “baby’s first psychedelic” and for good reason — it’s fairly gentle and comes with a bit of a mood lift such that it’s less likely to take you to a dark place than many other psychedelics, so it’s a great introduction for folk who are trying them out.

This doesn’t apply when you thought you were taking MDMA though — Getting a set of completely unexpected effects would be scary in any situation, but psychedelic effects are all the more disconcerting. It’s difficult for me to predict exactly what you can expect in such a situation as it’s so dependent on set and setting, but I’d recommend that you meet any unexpected effects by alerting friends and getting them to take you to a safer situation ASAP.

Fortunately, this is really easy to test for with your Marquis reagent. MDMA will turn the reagent its iconic purple/black, whereas 2C-B will instead turn it a yellow/green colour.

Warning: Mislabelled Substance

Substance: DOC
Sold as: LSD
Location: Zurich
Advice: Any psychedelic substitution like this is complicated to discuss, because people’s experiences are so much more nuanced and personal than they are with different kinds of cathinone or benzo. With that in mind, we can’t really offer much information on the subjective experience of this substitution — we can’t even tell you what your experience would be like on actual acid, let alone if it’s a whole other substance.

That said, any unexpected psychedelic experience can be an immediate problem, which is why (and we know this must be tiresome to hear) you’ve gotta test before you dose. The classic go-to for testing LSD is Ehrlich reagent, and that’s what we’ll use here — DOC won’t produce any response at all in it, whereas LSD will slowly turn the reagent from clear to pink and finally purple.

Warning: Mislabelled Substance

Substance: Cocaine
Sold as: MDMA
Location: London
Advice: Glib comments about good deals notwithstanding, this could be a real issue for an inexperienced or thoughtless user. Cocaine is a lot stronger gram-for-gram than MD, so if you were to bomb this or rack up one big line then you could quickly find yourself in trouble.

If you don’t do that, however, this is pretty manageable. Cocaine, famously, makes you go numb at the point of contact (nose, gums etc) whereas MDMA simply tastes awful without the relief of anaesthesia. This means that as long as you start low and go slow, you’ll be able to tell them apart long before this becomes a problem — then you’ve got a bag of coke for half the price!

If you want to be sure though, this is also pretty easy to sort out with reagent tests: MDMA will turn your Marquis reagent a deep purple/black, whereas cocaine will have no effect on it at all.

Warning: Mislabelled Substance

Substance: Cocaine
Sold as: Ketamine
Location: Cardiff
Advice: I’ve missed this kind of old-timey mixup! While it might alter the vibe of the night, taking a bump of coke thinking it’s ket is unlikely to be immediately dangerous and, depending how much you paid for it, might be a pleasant surprise. Any experienced user of either drug would know the difference immediately, and even a true newbie will work it out before it becomes an issue.

It’s still better to check once you have a suspicion, though — your best bet for testing would be Simon’s reagent, which turns orange, then pink, then yellow in response to ketamine and will only turn the faintest blue in the presence of cocaine. To confirm that it’s cocaine you’d need Scott reagent, however, which is pretty much used exclusively for that purpose — if you have it, cocaine should turn your Scott reagent pink and blue.

Warning: Mislabelled Substance

Substance: MDMA and caffeine
Sold as: Amphetamine
Location: Edinburgh
Advice: Well this is certainly unusual — ordinarily we’d expect speed to be sold as MD rather than the other way around, but we live in strange times. The risks associated with this are pretty low though — even if someone is taking substantial bumps to account for the generally low quality of the UK’s street speed, they’re not likely to put themselves in danger of overdose before noticing something odd (and that’s assuming they don’t notice the change in flavour and general facial pain associated with snorting MDMA).

Fortunately, this is just as easy to test for as the inverse. Your trusty Marquis reagent will turn red/brown in the presence of speed (which is what we’re looking for in this case) and purple/black in the presence of MDMA. It’ll fizz a little in the presence of caffeine but most street speed is pretty high in caffeine anyway, so that’s to be expected.

Warning: Mislabelled Substance

Substance: 4-AcO-DMT and ketamine
Sold as: MDMA
Location: Carlisle
Advice: What in the tarnation fuck?

This isn’t quite as bad as it seemed at first, but that’s kind of a low bar — let’s get into it. 4-AcO-DMT is usually sold as “synthetic mushrooms” because it pretty much is, as far as we can tell, and it’s dosed at around the same amount you dose most tryptamines of this type: ~15–30mg. Ketamine, meanwhile, is generally dosed a little higher — we’re looking at around 30–50mg in general. Both of these, you may notice, are a lot lower than the usual MDMA dose which can be 100–200mg or more.

There is some good news, at least… relatively speaking. A user of this sample would either snort smaller bumps, in which case they’d probably notice the difference before things got too weird, or they’d take a full dose orally. Ketamine is far less active when consumed orally, so if they took this route then they might be tripping harder than they ever have before, but at least they wouldn’t also be K-holing.

If you suspect that you’ve taken something like this, your best move is to cut your losses and cancel whatever you have planned, because that’s not going to work out — get yourself extricated from your current situation and back to a safe, comfortable environment where someone you trust can keep an eye on you.

This is pretty easy to test, at least. 4-AcO-DMT will turn your Marquis reagent brown (although some reports indicate an initial yellow/green reaction) and ket won’t react with it, while MDMA will turn it purple/black.

Ketamine info: https://psychonautwiki.org/wiki/Ketamine

Warning: Mislabelled Substance

Substance: Ketamine
Sold as: Amphetamine
Location: London
Advice: This sample is a case study in the benefits of starting low and going slow: ketamine is about half as strong as pure speed (30–75mg for a common dose compared to 15–30mg) but ket is often sold much purer, so an experienced user may end up taking enough in that first line for things to start getting pretty weird. While the direct physical risks associated with doing this are relatively minimal, finding yourself suddenly ketty (particularly if the feeling is new to you) can be quite disorienting and frightening, as well as rendering you vulnerable to falling all over yourself. If you find yourself in this situation, your best bet would be to find a mate and get them to extract you from the situation and off to somewhere safer for a chiller evening.

Fortunately, this sample is much easier to test than the above: Marquis reagent will turn a rich orange/red in the presence of amphetamine, whereas it won’t respond to ketamine at all.
